If you're like me, "changing your sheets" means throwing them in the washer several times a month and then putting them back on the bed. I sleep on the same sheets day after day, year after year, and only when a big hole emerges do I buy new sheets. Once those clean, fresh sheets are on, I then wonder why I waited so long to get new ones! I begin to sleep better and vow to pay a little more attention to my sheets.
Don't underestimate the power of sheets. Quality sheets are essential to a good night's sleep. Read the following truths about linens and you may discover that it is time for you, too, to really "change your sheets."
All cotton sheets "breathe." When I was first married, I kept waking up during the night. I thought it might be the excitement of sleeping next to my beloved, but, alas, I was wrong! A friend suggested that I check the fabric content of my sheets. They were a blend of polyester and cotton. Since polyester does not "breathe", it was making me hot and uncomfortable. I switched to 100% cotton sheets and my problem vanished!
The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the sheet will be. Not just a marketing gimmick to get consumers to spend more on their sheets, a higher thread count means more threads per square inch. The more threads, the softer and longer lasting your sheets will be.
Cotton sheets are easy to care for. Gone are the days when you had to iron cotton sheets! New processes in the manufacturing of textiles allow most cotton sheets to come out of the dryer virtually wrinkle free.
Several fabric finishes give extra comfort. Modern technology has allowed sheet manufacturers to either weave sheets in an innovative way or add a finishing process that gives the fabric a unique feel. In a Sateen Weave, two threads are woven over one, to give a silky hand. A Brushed Finish is a process that adds softness to the fabric.
All cotton is not created equal. There are various grades of cotton used in the production of linens. Egyptian cotton has long, staple fibers that result in the most durable, soft, and luxurious sheets.
Not all sheets fit all beds. Measure your mattress depth before purchasing sheets. If you have an extra deep mattress, buy sheets that will fit!
Sheets are allowed to look good. Although sheets are often hidden under a comforter, why not let them look good? Quality sheets are available in tasteful prints and eye-catching solids. If you prefer white or ecru, check out the "non-solid solids", which are subtle patterns on a solid sheet, such as elegant jacquard stripes and florals.
Give your sheets a little attention! By choosing your sheets carefully and replacing them periodically, you'll be rewarded with a more comfortable bed and a better night's sleep!
