1. Thread count. If you want soft, luxurious sheets look for fabrics with a high thread count, which is the number of threads woven lengthwise and crosswise into one square inch of fabric. Tighter weaves improve comfort and durability. In luxury sheets, thread count often tops 300. Percale sheets have a count of 180 and muslin sheets have a count of 120. Check out our Fabric Comparison Chart.
2. All cotton isn't created equal. Egyptian cotton is the king of fibers. Grown only in the Nile River Valley, it's the strongest and most lustrous cotton. The land of the pharaohs does have, however, several notable competitors. Scientists have developed Supima cotton, which is grown only by members of the Supima Association of America. Sheets made from this cotton are both strong and soft. After Supima cotton, there is Pima cotton, the predecessor of its hi-tech cousin and originally grown in the Southwest by the Pima Indians. This cotton remains a staple in American bedding.
3. Pay attention to weaves and blends. While sheets with plain or twill weaves often win long-lasting fans, look to sateen for the highest quality. Sateen has more exposed length-wise yarns on its surface than other weaves, creating a high sheen and satiny look.
