Towels

Often underappreciated, towels don't get the attention they deserve. Make sure you choose the right towel. It's an investment that's going to stay with you for a long time.

1. Explore the fabric.
There's nothing more important than a towel's material. Cotton's durability and absorbency make it the favored thread for terry towels. While American upland cotton is the most common, Egyptian cotton provides the most luxurious feel, which is reflected by its higher price. Loops in the towel do the dirty work. Towels with either more loops or thicker loops have higher absorbency and typically cost more, too.

2. Wash carefully.
Machine washing in warm water with a mild soap usually takes care of cleaning but remember to wash dark colors separately. Bleeding, the release of excess dye when washing, usually ends after the first three or four washings. Also, avoid fabric softeners, which often contain a silicone-based chemical that will limit a towel's absorbency.

3. A weighty matter.
Weight is a big factor in determining towel prices but don't whip out the scales. Manufacturers base prices on the total weight of a dozen towels. A dozen average-quality towels will weigh about 12 pounds, while luxury towels will often total between 13 to 18 pounds.
