The right comforter can make or break your bedroom ensemble. After all, you may have Egyptian cotton sheets, but that's not what your guests will see. They'll just see a ratty old comforter unless you think carefully when choosing what goes on top of your bed.
1. The design. A comforter, which covers the top and sides of a mattress, consists of two pieces of fabric stitched along all four sides and filled with either a synthetic or natural fill. While down is the most popular fill when warmth is needed, decorative comforters usually have a synthetic fill.
2. Craftsmanship. The finer details typically set the price of a comforter, so look for quality quilting patterns, tassels and cording around the edges. Also, a comforter's warmth is determined by the quality of the fill, which is reflected by "fill power." Numbers reflecting "fill power" usually range from 500 to 800, with 625 or greater considered the best.
3. Protect the investment. Duvet Covers, also called "comforter covers," are giant open-ended pillowcases that fit over a comforter. Duvet covers can be closed by buttons, ties or a zipper.
