Sheets Buyers Guide

When buying sheets, choose a color and design that coordinates with your bedding ensemble. Other factors to consider are durability, comfort and ease of care. The two most important features in determining which sheets you should buy are thread count and fabric content.

Thread Count

Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. The softest and most luxurious sheets have the highest thread count. High thread count sheets are also more durable.

Fabric Content

100% cotton sheets will be the softest and most breathable, as they are an all-natural fiber. There are different grades of cotton, which is determined by the length of its staple or fiber. Longer staples result in more luxurious and durable fabrics. Egyptian cotton is softer, stronger and more absorbent than other cotton yarns. Pima cotton is almost equal in quality, with fibers that form a silky and durable fabric. Both varieties create a comfortable, long-lasting sheet whose texture improves with time.

Care Requirements

Machine wash cotton sheets with like colors in warm water. Dark-colored sheets should be washed alone before their first use to soften and remove excess surface dyes. Tumble dry cotton sheets on a warm cotton setting and avoid overloading. To reduce wrinkling, remove sheets promptly from the dryer, smooth them out and fold immediately.

Sizing Tips

Begin by checking your mattress size; use our handy Bedding Size Chart as a guide. Be sure to check the depth of your mattress. Many of today's pillowtop mattresses require fitted sheets with extra-deep pockets.
